L’acchāṇi — அச்சாணி — est la clavette d’essieu : la plus petite pièce du char, et la seule sans laquelle il ne roule pas. C’est le plus vieil argument que je connaisse contre l’idée que la taille fait la capacité. Il a environ deux mille ans, il vient de chez mes ancêtres, et c’est exactement ce qu’on construit.The acchāṇi — அச்சாணி — is the linchpin of the axle: the smallest part of the chariot, and the one without which it does not roll. It is the oldest argument I know against the idea that size makes capability. It is about two thousand years old, it comes from my ancestors, and it is exactly what we build.

Un commerce de deux personnes fait exactement le même métier — souvent mieux — et pilote à l'instinct.A two-thousand-person group forecasts its sales, watches its margins line by line, orders at the right moment, and knows every morning where it stands. A two-person business does exactly the same job — often better — and runs on instinct.

Ce n'était pas une question d'intelligence. C'était le coût de la coordination : il fallait un informaticien, un contrôleur de gestion, un intégrateur. Pour une épicerie de quartier, l'addition n'a jamais tenu.It was never about intelligence. It was the cost of coordination: you needed an IT person, a controller, an integrator. For a corner shop, the sums never worked.

Ce coût vient de s'effondrer. Pas dans dix ans — maintenant. Une machine sait aujourd'hui lire une commande écrite à la main dans un message, la ranger au bon endroit, calculer ce qu'il faut produire, et prévenir quand une marge se dégrade. Ce qui manque n'est plus la technologie : c'est quelqu'un qui vienne l'installer dans l'arrière-boutique, et qui reste quand ça casse.That cost has just collapsed. Not in ten years — now. A machine can read an order handwritten into a message, file it in the right place, work out what to produce, and raise a flag when a margin slips. What is missing is no longer the technology: it is someone to come and install it in the back office, and stay when it breaks.

Nous ne prétendons pas avoir résolu cela. Nous l'avons appris en nous trompant dans notre propre production, et nous nous trompons encore. La question n'a jamais été de savoir si un flux allait casser un samedi matin : il casse. La question, c'est en combien de temps il est debout, et si l'erreur se répète.We do not claim to have solved this. We learned it by getting it wrong in our own production, and we still do. The question was never whether a workflow would break on a Saturday morning: it breaks. The question is how fast it is back up, and whether the mistake repeats.

C'est la seule compétence que nous revendiquons vraiment : nous relever vite, et ne pas refaire deux fois la même erreur. Les années ne nous ont pas appris à avoir raison — elles nous ont appris où sont les pièges, et à quelle vitesse on peut en sortir.That is the only skill we really claim: getting back up fast, and not making the same mistake twice. The years did not teach us to be right — they taught us where the traps are, and how quickly you can climb out.
